Custom Golf Club Fitting

Golf Club designers have been pushing
the boundaries of golf club design and Golf courses have been made longer
and tighter to accommodate these changes.
The Golf Governing bodies have now decided
that 'enough is enough' brought in strict rules with regard to equipment,
so strict that Golf Club designers no longer have almost a free rein
to push all boundaries to achieve more distance and better accuracy.
In so doing they virtually forced changes on Golf Clubs to
alter their
Courses to maintain a realistically challenging course often
at colossal
expense. |
The only real chance a golfer has now to improve
their game and to maximise their performance is to have true custom
built or fitted golf clubs.
Only 2-3 % of Golfers play with golf clubs that are truly custom
fitted
This is because most golfers know next to nothing about how to
pick a golf club to maximise there strength and minimise their
weaknesses. Clubs are bought because of its logo, cost, cosmetic
looks and what an advert promises you will happen when you swing
this club.
In a survey of 2000 Golfers with various handicaps asking what
constitutes 'custom fitting'. The majority considered using golf
clubs from an OEM (Original equipment manufactory, ie Callaway,
Taylor Made etc) fitting cart on a demo day custom fitting.
They were not aware, or even made aware that fitting
carts offer normally no more than three variables in the respect
of lie angle, flex and possibly length. Others felt that filling
out a questionnaire on a website constituted being custom fitted.
Unfortunately this does not even come close to
a real custom fitting.
OEM fittings take anything from 15 minutes to normally a maximum of 1 hour to fit someone unfortunately this does not even scratch the surface of what true custom fitting by a Professional Golf clubmaker and fitter can do. OEM fittings also fit you to the clubs that are already made. Professionally fitted clubs are not already made they are built to your spec from scratch.
PGA pros are not professional clubmakers, they have a sound knowledge of how clubs perform and a basic knowledge of how to fit someone but they are not the experts Professional clubmakers and fitters are.
Real custom fitting is a complex and scientific
subject requiring precise personal measurements. Individual swing
and various physical parameters are determined and a set is hand
built for the golfer.
Each golfers swing, strength and size
is checked practically on the golf range using a wide assortment
of clubheads, shafts and grips available, unlike the OEM clubs
which are produced in a factory production line and contracted
to only use certain shafts and grips with each particular brand
of club.
Another fact is that it can be difficult to truly fit OEM clubs due to the way the clubheads are made, ie. some are not bendable and all of them do not have a weight port at the bottom of the hosel like the clubs Professional clubmakers and fitters use. The problem with not having a weight port in the hosel is that weight has to be added down the shaft to change the swingweight etc and because the added weight is now relatively high on the clubhead the centre of gravity will be drawn towards it, which will totally change the way the clubhead performs.
In comparison to the 3 variables found by an OEM
fitting Cart a Clubfitter will look at Twenty two. Namely
- Shafts:
- Flex,
- Torque,
- Weight,
- Spine alignment,
- Flex profile,
- Material composition and design.
- Clubheads:
- Loft angle,
- Lie angle,
- Hosel offset,
- Sole angle,
- Bulge,
- Roll,
- Face angle,
- Material composition and design.
- Grips:
- Size,
- Weight,
- Material and design
- Club:
- Length,
- Total Weight,
- Swingweight,
- Moment of inertia.
- Set Make up.
The Club fitting system we use
Our system is derived from what is know as the
'practical club fitting' method which most top club fitting experts
currently use. Our system is continuously evolving and reviewed.
It is rational and comprehensive and achieves the best results.
The system takes from one and a half hours to two
and half hours to complete. Which we believe every minute is justified
as golf equipment is not cheap and we make sure our clients are
correctly fitted, are totally satisfied with our service, can confidently
take their best game onto the golf course and achieve the results
which they had hoped for. We can take pleasure in being a major
part of that improvement.
Step 1
A personal interview and present golf club evaluation
An introductory interview is conducted so that
we can get to know you, discuss your game, determine your aspirations
and assess your current equipment, if any. You will also get to
know us.
Its important for us to know what equipment you are using
as there are unfortunately no set standards in the golf industry
and what could be one companies regular flex could be another companies
stiff flex or visa versa. This will all help us build a picture
and start fitting not necessarily to today's swing but also to
the swing you are aspiring to have. We then take a few measurements
for club length measured from your wrist to the floor and for your
grip.
These measurements are only gauges as playing ability swing
plane are looked at during the next stage called Dynamic fitting
which we consider a better gauge to measuring the length of clubs
to your swing.
Step 2
The Dynamic Fitting
This we feel is one of the most important parts
of the fitting process. Dynamic fitting is where we get you to
hit numerous balls using a large variety of fitting clubs we have
in our arsenal. Saying this we don't like to confuse maters by
giving you loads and loads of different clubs to try we concentrate
on the clubs that will fit your unique swing.
During the Dynamic
fitting process we are looking at a vast number of elements and
variables including clubhead speed, swing tempo, backswing length,
shaft loading,
shaft weight, torque, flex and flex profile, ball trajectory, launch
angle and height and distance achieved, but most importantly we
are getting 360 degree feedback from the customer as to his/her
likes and dislikes.
To help us determine exactly what your swing
is doing we use state of the art devices such as the Vector Launch
Monitor or a Swing Mate Beltronics Swing Speed Analyzer whichever
is appropriate and beneficial to assess you and your unique Golf
Swing. Slowly we start piecing together a club for you.
Clubhead designs:
Clubheads have developed so fast over the last
10 years and choosing one can be easy. Most Golfers buy clubs because
of their cosmetic looks, particular name embossed on it, because
their idol uses it, or the price.
We can help you out with this
decision, as there are many clubhead designs on the market
each with there own characteristics some would suit your swing
but many more that would not. A club professional with an in depth
knowledge of your unique golf swing and comprehensive knowledge
of the particular clubhead could give you some sound advise as
to which clubhead might suit your game,
but unfortunately they are not always the experts in this field,
Professional clubmakers and fitters are and there is more to a golf club than just the
clubhead itself.
The OEM's do not publish the characteristics of the clubs in their range. The range of clubs a Professional clubmaker and fitter would use are what are called are component clubs and all the characteristics are known to the professional clubmaker and fitter to aid him when professionally fitting someone.
We help guide you through this process finding
a clubhead you like that will best suit your unique swing.
If you have a driver under 11 degrees and you
cannot send the ball over 200 yards you could probably do with
more loft. Don't worry you are not alone 90% of golfers play drivers
with to little loft. The fact is that we are prepared to prove
every point we make so if you find it too difficult to believe
us, no problem we will prove it to you on the Vector Launch system.
As a general rule the average man swings a driver
at 86 mph he would need a driver of at least 13 degrees angle to
be most effective. What is the angle of your driver?
Shafts, Shafts and more shafts:
Shafts like club heads have there own characteristics
some would suit your swing many others would not. We are not only
talking about flex we are also talking about weight, bed point, kick point and in graphite
shafts torque (twisting of the shaft). We are not governed by what
shaft we put in your clubs and have a vast
amount to choose from to ensure we get one to best suit your unique
swing.
People talk about fitting shafts as a science, which it
is; we also treat it as an Art, after all, what is good for one
player may not work for another as we all swing the golf club differently.
Get a Grip.
There are also a vast amount of grips on the market
and once again we are not governed by the type of grip we can put
on your clubs. We like to fit grips for comfort and size so you
muscle s are relaxed allowing a smooth swing. Far too often golfers
tend to grip clubs too tight and destroy their rhythm as a consequence.
Set Make up
How many golfers can hit a 1,2,3 or 4 iron well?
Consistently well? If you can you should look at taking up golf
full time. Nearly all the top pros are now playing hybrids
or Utility clubs. By design long irons have become
almost impossible to hit well as they are too long and don't have
enough loft. So why not have a putter, 3 wedges, PW through to
5 iron, a couple of Hybrids to replace your 3 and 4 iron, a driver
and you have still got room for 2 more woods.
Step 3
The assembled Golf Club Custom Fitted to you.
It is now up to us to assemble your clubs from
the information we have collected. They will be precisely matched,
measured and cut to length, frequency tuned and swing-weighted
or swing Moment of Inertia matched to match your unique swing. This is all done in our workshop and
not on a production line. The Club maker will take pride in making
an ultimate set of golf clubs for a golfers unique Golf swing.
After service
Once we supply your Golf Clubs the fitting does
not necessarily stop there. Of course you are our customer but
we view you more as a client. We encourage feedback and your clubs
may occasionally need fine adjustments to make sure they are still
an exact fit, so retaining an interest in you and
your performance will help you enjoy your golf game and we can
be part of that success.
This is all part of our comprehensive service.
The Client will then have a set of clubs that
will provide the highest ball speed with the most optimum Launch
angle that are unique to their swing.
Finally some Facts:
According to a study by National Golf Foundation
(NGF) THREE MILLION people leave the game of golf each year. The
underlying problem was that the game was to difficult!! Many did
not realize that 'they' made it difficult for themselves by trying
to manage with inappropriate equipment. We all know
golf is not easy especially if we are perfectionists but it can
still be enjoyed at all levels and success never came easy to anyone.
Custom Fitted golf clubs are for ALL golfers.
A Golf Professional can skillfully swing their golf clubs well,
they do this with clubs that are custom fitted to them, what chance
has the average golfer with equipment that is sold in standard
form off the rack? Clubs suitable for a six foot strong person
will not suit a less able 5 foot person, isn't that obvious?
Sadly too many potential golfers do not see it that way. Golf clubs
on the rack are made so one size fits all!!
90 % of golfers have drivers that are too long
and don't have enough loft!
How many people know that the 3 and 4 iron manufactured
in a factory are almost impossible to hit consistently by the average
golfer, why are 1 and 2 irons so difficult to get hold of now?
Over 50 % of golfers have golf irons that don't
fit them.
Custom Made Golf clubs are no more expensive than
big brand named clubs bought off the rack, as customers do not
have to foot the bill for expensive advertisements used by the
OEM brands. The quality is also guaranteed as club makers would
not buy components unless they are of superior quality and also
because any club hand built will be scrutinized by the club maker
before being assembled.
Factory built sets are not normally tuned
to make sure the flex frequency remains constant throughout the
set infact in a set of average clubs you could have a range of 3 different flexes ie 3 stiff, 3 regular and 3 senior flex due to the tolerances in manufacturing of shafts, clubheads etc. Frequency matching would take to long and clubs built in the factory are
made for the majority not
minority, with the theory of one size fits all.
Using Customised equipment could improve your
game up to 25%. We have not come across anyone we have fitted with
a set of clubs that have not improved.
